Technology has brought a dramatic change in our lives. Human who used to live in caves in dinosaurian era is now living in well furnished houses with almost all facilities. It is not the end as we are moving ahead our demands are also being increased. As we all know necessity is the mother of invention. Now a day’s luxury has become necessity. To fulfill our luxurious demands, technology has taken the shape of nanotechnology.
Nanotechnology as the word is indicating is the working at molecular level. Sunlight is renewable source of energy. Scientists are working on renewable sources as non renewable sources will end one day and then we will be again living like cave men.
New designs of solar panels are coming in the markets which are more efficient and cheap. According to one study, even a best design of solar panel works with 40% efficiency i.e. out of one packet of sunlight 60% is not converted into electricity by a solar cell.
Scientists are now more working on the affordability of solar panel rather its efficiency. But according to Steven Novack of the Idaho National Laboratories, solar panel can now convert 80% of light quanta into electricity. He has developed cost effective and foldable solar panel which is now more efficient then any other solar panel available in the market. Nanotechnology is the art of science in developing that solar panel.
Construction and Working
The surface of this solar cell is covered with miniscule nano-antennae. Their function is to capture the Infrared IR radiations. IR radiations are reflected by the surface of the earth and are present in the atmosphere at night. These antennas absorb those radiations and keep the solar panel working even at night.
According to Steven, material which is present under those antennas can be created easily. That material will convert IR radiations into electricity. At present there is no that type of material which could serve the purpose.
A way has to be devised yet to capture those electrons which are being emitted by these antennas. Scientists in the Idaho National Laboratories are working on this thing and they may find a solution of this problem. AC/DC converter may be placed between these small antennas. The scientists working on this project think that this new kind of solar panel will increase the efficiency at the same price.
