Construction and Functions of Solar Cells

Solar energy is the only type of fuel that is present all over the world and is available for no cost. There are a number of devices in the market that are operated on solar energy. Sunlight is being converted into many other forms of energy and is extremely practical. Solar lights and solar heating systems are two of the most wide-spread applications of solar energy.

Solar cells are the most vital part of the solar energy system. The name widely used for solar cells is photovoltaic cells. We can regard these cells as the energy conversion devices. It converts the solar energy or light energy into electrical energy.

Difference between solar and PV cells

The only difference between solar cells and photovoltaic cells is that in cease of solar cells the light energy is taken entirely from sun, and in case of PV cells the source of light is not determined. Modules can be formed by grouping together the solar cells. You can group them together by connecting them electrically into a single frame.

Solar panels

Like a satellite dish or solar calculator, solar panels can be divided in to a number of individual solar cells.

The solar panels are the modules made up of solar cells grouped together. The advantage of grouped solar cells, or in other words solar panels is that they can provide us with higher voltages. For getting peak current and voltages, the solar panels are interconnected.

Silicon – widely used material

The material that has been used in the manufacture of solar cells is silicon. Silicon is a semiconductor material that is perfect for making solar cells or PV cells. When the solar panel is hit by the photon of light, it can perform any of the given three things:

  • It absorbs
  • It passes through the surface of silicon
  • It reflects off the surface of the material

Absorption of the photon of light serves as the base for the solar generation and electricity creation. The electrons in the semiconductor start flowing due to the energy provided by the photon. This movement of electrons generate current that is then stored in the rechargeable battery. This electrical energy is then used for different purposes.

Alternatives for silicon

For increasing the efficiency of silicon, doping is done by adding impurities to the material. It is converted into either n-type or -type material. However, there are a number of other materials that are incredible alternatives for silicon. These materials include round, foil, plastic, carbon-based cells, and kendka solar cells. The output of the solar cell is measured in watts.
