World’s Largest Solar Powered Boat is On Its Way To World Journey

Posted on 05 April 2010

Some time back, PlanetSolar presented the world with the 85-tonne catamaran boat equipped with 38,000 solar cells. The boat had been named Türanor, which means power of the sun.

Recently, the ship has started its first journey. The ship was first lowered by crane into the waters of the Kiel firth in northern Germany.

After a whole year of extensive testing, the Türanor will start off its voyage around the world in order to capture as much solar energy as possible, at a steady pace of 7.5 knots.

Thousands of solar cells have been placed all over the boat. Moreover, panels using advanced technology have been placed on the starboard, port, and stern sections, all of which are able to retract during rough weather. The captured solar energy will be stored in the world’s largest lithium ion battery, which will power the boat’s emissions-free, silent electric motor.
