Some Considerations Before Going Solar

Posted on 05 February 2010

Want to get your solar system built? Great! But wait, have you considered everything you need to? Just to be sure, have a look at the next 10 points, 1 for each finger.

1. First things first, what do you want? A solar hot water system or a system to generate electricity? Or is it both?

2. Where do you sit geographically? Your solar panels need to be orientated to receive the most sunlight they can daily and according to the season. General rule of thumb is to have them facing due south if you’re in the northern hemisphere and north if in the southern hemisphere thought a 45 degree variance shouldn’t make a huge impact in terms of performance.

3. What about your roof? Is it orientated to face the sunlight for the majority of the day?

4. How about the rest of your community? Does your neighbors landscape include tall dense tree areas or buildings that could block out lots of sunlight?

5. Although solar panels are still very productive in cloudy areas, it’s worth looking at what your local weather conditions are like. The more sun, the better!

6. Again, although the angle tilt of your roof shouldn’t affect the performance of your panels, it is still a good idea to find out if its at its optimal angle (which is equal to its latitude).

7. How much electricity are you actually using? Dig out your electricity bills and average out the cost to power up your load annually to get a better picture of hoe much power you’ll need.

8. When considering the installation of a solar system, think about maximizing your savings by switching to energy efficient appliances as well as doing the little bits that help shave your amount of unnecessary energy consumption.

9. DON’T forget that you will also need balance-of-system equipment to transfer the electricity generated to you household appliances, so factor this in to your project.

10. ALWAYS use a reputable adequately qualified professional to get the job done right! The only thing worse than getting expensive work done is having to get it re-done folks.
