How Does Renewable Energy Work?

Posted on 01 February 2010

Renewable energy is the energy, which is derived from naturally occurring non- depleting sources, such as solar, wind and hydroelectric power.

renewawable energy source

Energy sources like oil and coal are not considered as renewable energy sources, because they rely on burning a material, which must be extracted and cannot be recreated.

Renewable energy is often called environmental friendly, or green energy, as it makes use of clean natural resources, although certain types of renewable energy do produce pollution. With the increase in global demand for energy, renewable energy has become increasingly important as it is the only source of energy which promises to remain forever.

Sources of Renewable Energy

Currently, the largest source of renewable energy is hydroelectric power. Hydroelectric power generation makes use of the kinetic energy of flowing water, which is used to turn turbines in order to produce electricity.

Wind power is also a vital source of renewable energy, which involves harnessing the kinetic energy of wind currents to turn large fan-like turbines in order to produce electricity.

Solar power, on the other hand makes use of the light and heat produced by the sun as an energy source. Recently, other sources of energy have also been identified, such as plants that are being used to create bio fuels such as ethanol as an alternative to gasoline and bio gases as an alternative to natural gas. Geothermal energy is also another type of renewable energy that uses the natural heat of the earth’s core to produce power.

Potential of Renewable Energy

The increasing population and the rapidly depleting natural resources have increased the importance of renewable energy, which is likely to increase more in the future.
