Posted on 13 January 2010

Come on now, how many of you whistle an ignorant tune when you hear the words “renewable energy”? The sad truth is, you are by no means alone. Whether it’s because you aren’t quite sure how it works or because you’ve never seen it being used, we are here to open your eyes! Life is changing fast in more ways than one and in tomorrows world ignorance will no longer be an excuse.

In a nutshell renewable energy is exactly that, sources of energy which are generated using natural resources like sunlight, wind, water etc that are renewable in that they are naturally replenished. So what’s all the fuss about? Fossil fuels such as coal and oil and other non-renewable sources are seriously dwindling (taking millions of years to form) which makes it expensive and incidentally very damaging to the environment due to the way they are processed.

Solar Panels

A great starting point! Something you may already be familiar with is Solar Power. Solar power uses the energy from sunlight to produce electricity. This is currently one of the fasted growing energy sources across the world. One of the beauties of solar panels is that you don’t have to worry about the latest model. Although you will find slight variations such as flexible or transportable panels, they are more or less at a developed stage work wise. All types will do the job right if installed by highly reputable professionals.

Although more domestically used from around the mid 20th Century, solar power technology has been in development from the early 19th Century, making this a very reliable source! In 1973, the oil crises lead to an increase in the production of Photovoltaic solar power, further increasing from the mid 1990’s once the PV sector leadership shifted from the US to Japan and Germany.

Japan introduced a subsidy program amongst other initiatives to encourage the installation of residential solar systems. Germany is one now of the highest rankers in the solar energy market with the Canadian government also offering the Renewable Energy Standard Offer Program (RESOP) and Many American states running tax rebate schemes for “going green”.
