10 Tips To Utilize Maximum Solar Energy

Posted on 18 December 2009

1. No matter what type or size of solar power system or product you plan to use, make sure that the solar panel faces in the direction of the sun.

2. Make a list of all your electrical appliances together with their wattage and the hours of use, before you meet a consultant regarding the installation of the solar power system.

3. Remember to check what the local, state and federal incentives are in your town, before committing to a specific power system. You can find this information at the DSIRE (Database of State Incentives for Renewable Energy) database at http://www.dsireusa.org/

4. It is better to have a local licensed installer put in your system as they know all the local regulations and will be able to give you valuable information regarding these rules.

5. Keep the solar panels clean, even if you have to go up onto your roof once a month. Even a thin layer of dust or dirt on the glass cover will effectively block some solar power and the system won’t be able to operate with maximum efficiency.

6. When you calculate the number of panels you require, use winter sunshine hours rather than summer hours as they are almost twice. This could lead you to incorrect calculation, and you may end up using backup power in winter more often than you would like.

7. Keep the panels as close as possible to the batteries in order to avoid losing power in the cable. Always make sure that your panels are not shaded.

8. When planning a solar heating system, consider using solar shades or smart glasses to augment your system as they will help you to save a lot of energy that might otherwise escape from the house.

9. In many states, you can take tours of homes that rely fully on solar energy. By taking one of these tours, you can see a solar home in its working state and decide better for your own home.

10. It is important to make you house as energy efficient as possible before installing a solar system. Try installing double glaze, new insulations, replace incandescent light globes with fluorescent etc. This will help you to reduce the size and cost of the system you’re installing.
