There has been a substantial increase in the portable devices that charge up gadgets from the sun. These gadgets are becoming much smaller in size and more powerful everyday.

New portable solar chargers have now been introduced that can be plugged directly into a laptop and can provide up to a quarter of its power needs while in use.

One such device, the Solargorilla charger by Powertraveller, can also level out the electrical spikes caused when clouds cover the sun.

According to the head of Powertraveller, Jerry Ranger, the charger can convert a greater percentage of the sunlight’s energy in a more compact way as compared to the previous devices.

Previously, the efficiency level of the device was 15%, which is now almost 20%, and within the next 18 months, it is expected to go to 22%.

However, currently consumers can only use the portable panels for charging up small devices such as phones or music players.

A portable four-panel folding array of such solar panels is under construction, which will be able to run a laptop and charge the battery at the same time.

The device is planned for released in spring 2010. It will be the first commercial device to offer AC or DC outputs.
