Sun House: A House Powered By Solar Power

Posted on 07 February 2009

Solar powered housing projects are getting very popular each day. but there are very few projects that can claim to be fully self sufficient. There is always some need of outside resources. But may be this solar powered house designed by famous architect Luca Donner  can be easily termed as one of most brilliant examples of self-sufficient buildings. This sun house is  designed for smart energy living.

The basic concept is to maximize the utilization of sunlight throughout the day and during all seasons. Each apartment in sun house is integrated with photovoltaic panels aka solar panels. Each Panel is enough to produce enough electricity to cover the building’s needs. The glass face on each apartment provides for additional light and heat.

The Sun House is designed not only to collect solar power, I also collects rain water. which is collected and filtered down to a tank in basement. Which is then pumped up by each apartment using solar powered water pumps.

The method of constructing Sun House is also very unusual. The house is not built at site but only the core. Apartments are pre-fabricated , pre-assembled and mounted at top of each other by heli-copter cranes around a central core, which bears the building.

I am especially impressed by the bird eye view of the building. It looks like a flower and that make me smile.

Wow, that is truly amazing stuff. Well done!@

As much as I advocate anything to do with solar energy, I must say these look incredibly ugly!

    Wow – that’s a creative idea.
I’m not sure I like the design totally, but who knows, it may end up being more appealing in real life. Either way, it’s a great idea!

…another sort of complicated object made just of renderings…
Sun house??? or you use the sun for energy or to look at it…rain water??? there is no sufficient captation area for it…prefabricated modules???how can you connect them i a simple way if they can rotate (for example bath and kitchen water connection)…panels produce enough electricity to cover the building’s needs???i think they not produce enough energy to rotate elements…sustainable architecture is strictly related to the place, weather conditions ecc. ,you can put it everywhere…

  5. It can be a good idea and design, but orienting PV modules in that way is pretty much a waste of energy. Unless the floors themselves move, but it wouldn’t be the best idea…
Anyway, I’d like a slightly deeper description, it’s not clear if it’s some designer’s cool concept or if it has a detailed project in the background.
